How to Pray the Rosary

For Every Soul

A prayer anyone can learn

The Rosary may seem complicated at first — but it is one of the most beautiful and accessible prayers in the Christian tradition. Whether you are just beginning or returning to the faith, this guide will walk you through every step, every prayer, and every mystery.

You can pray it in twenty minutes. You can pray it anywhere — in your home, on a bus, walking to work. All you need is this guide and a willing heart.

"The Rosary is the most excellent form of prayer and the most efficacious means of attaining eternal life."— Pope Leo XIII

"The Rosary is a school of contemplation — it teaches us to look at Christ through the eyes of Mary."— Saint John Paul II
Understanding the Rosary

What is the Rosary?

The Rosary is a Catholic devotion that combines vocal prayer with meditative contemplation. While praying a series of Hail Marys on beads, you simultaneously meditate on 20 events from the lives of Jesus and Mary — called Mysteries.

It is structured into five decades (groups of ten Hail Marys), each focused on one Mystery. The prayers and beads keep your hands and lips occupied so that your heart and mind can enter into deep meditation on the life of Christ.

A full Rosary contains five decades. The four sets of mysteries — Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious — are rotated through the week.

Step by Step

How to Pray the Rosary

Follow these steps from beginning to end. At first, keep this guide open beside you. Within a week of daily prayer, you will know it by heart.

1
Begin with the Sign of the Cross
Hold the crucifix in your hand and make the Sign of the Cross. This is how all Catholic prayer begins — an act of faith in the Holy Trinity.

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
2
The Apostles' Creed — on the Crucifix
Still holding the crucifix, pray the Apostles' Creed. This professes the core of the Catholic faith and unites your prayer to the universal Church.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified.....

Our Father — on the first large bead
Move to the first large bead and pray the Our Father (also called the Lord's Prayer). This prayer was taught to us by Jesus himself.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come ....

Three Hail Marys — for faith, hope, and charity
On each of the next three small beads, pray one Hail Mary. Offer each one for an increase of Faith, Hope, and Charity (Love) — the three theological virtues.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus....

Say quietly to yourself before each: "1st Hail Mary — for Faith," "2nd — for Hope," "3rd — for Charity."

Glory Be — on the medal or linking bead
After the three Hail Marys, pray the Glory Be (Doxology). This short prayer of praise ends every decade and glorifies the Holy Trinity.

Glory Be (Doxology)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit......

Announce the First Mystery — then pray the Our Father
Before each decade, announce the Mystery you will meditate on. Then pray the Our Father on the large bead to begin that decade. The mystery gives your meditation its focus — hold the scene in your heart as you pray.
Today's Mystery: . See the full list below.
You don't need to say the Mystery out loud if you're praying alone — simply recall it in your heart and let it guide your meditation.

Ten Hail Marys — one full decade
On each of the ten small beads, pray one Hail Mary. As you do, keep the Mystery in your mind. You are not just reciting words — you are meditating on the life of Jesus and Mary. The Hail Marys are the rhythm that carries your heart into that meditation.
If your mind wanders — and it will — gently return it to the Mystery. This is not a failure; returning is itself a form of prayer.
After the ten Hail Marys, pray the Glory Be, and then optionally the Fátima Prayer (taught by Our Lady of Fátima in 1917).

Fátima Prayer (optional, after each decade)

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell,......

Repeat — Five Decades Total
After completing one decade (Our Father + 10 Hail Marys + Glory Be + optional Fátima Prayer), move to the next. Announce the next Mystery, pray the Our Father, and continue. A full Rosary is five decades.
The five mysteries for today are listed in the full schedule below. Each decade = one mystery. Five decades = one complete Rosary.
9
Close with the Hail Holy Queen
After the fifth decade, close the Rosary by praying the Hail Holy Queen (Salve Regina) — an ancient hymn to Mary that has ended the Rosary for centuries.

Hail Holy Queen (Salve Regina)

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope....

The Closing Prayer & Sign of the Cross
After the Hail Holy Queen, pray this short closing prayer, then conclude with the Sign of the Cross. Your Rosary is complete.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a physical Rosary to pray? +
No — a physical Rosary is helpful but not required. You can count on your fingers (10 per decade), or simply pray from memory. Many saints prayed the Rosary while walking with no beads at all. The beads are a tool to help you keep track, not a requirement for the prayer itself.
How long does it take? +
A full five-decade Rosary takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes when prayed at a calm, meditative pace. Beginners often take a little longer. If you are pressed for time, you can pray just one or two decades — even a single decade is a meaningful prayer. The goal is not speed but presence.
Can non-Catholics pray the Rosary? +
Yes. While the Rosary is a Catholic devotion, any Christian who wishes to meditate on the life of Jesus is welcome to pray it. Many Protestants and Orthodox Christians have found great fruit in the practice. The core of the Rosary is simply meditating on the Gospels — the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Why do Catholics pray to Mary? +
Catholics don't worship Mary — they ask for her intercession, just as you might ask a friend to pray for you. Mary is the Mother of Jesus and is believed to intercede powerfully for those who ask. The Hail Mary ends with "pray for us sinners" — a request for her prayers, not an act of worship. All prayer and worship in Catholicism is directed to God alone.
What if my mind wanders during the Rosary? +
This is completely normal, even for people who have prayed the Rosary for decades. The saints experienced the same thing. When you notice your mind has wandered, simply return gently to the prayer without frustration or guilt. Some spiritual directors teach that the act of returning the mind to God is itself a form of prayer — possibly more valuable than uninterrupted concentration.
Can I pray the Rosary without knowing all the mysteries? +
Absolutely. Begin by simply reciting the prayers. Over time, the mysteries will become familiar. You can use our Mystery of the Day page for guidance each day. Many people pray for months before the mysteries truly deepen into rich meditations — and that journey itself is the gift.
